Type Locality and Naming
Along the Kugitangtau Range, Southwest Gissar. N.V. Beznosov, V.V. Kurbatov in 1980, V.V. Kurbatov, E.A. Repman, 1982 (253, p.42) used the name of the series, proposed by a group of authors, 1971 (51, p.23) for the Jurassic carbonate formation.
Synonym: Kugitang Series, Кугитангская сер.
Lithology and Thickness
Various limestones, marls, terrigenous rocks, from which genetic groups of deposits have been distinguished, uniting spatially related genetic types of corresponding suites:
(a) Shallow sea (open shelf) with normal water salinity - Zarmas Fm - includes reef and reef-bar complexes of late Callovian and early Oxfordian;
(b) Inner, moderately deep-water part of the sea basin - Zakharlin Fm - includes middle Oxfordian reef complexes and isolated reef masses of the Gaurdak Fm type;
(c) Relatively deep-water lagoons with water salinity close to normal, connected to the sea basin - Guzhum-Tyubegatan Fm;
(d) Shallow, closed (barred) shelf – Kurek Fm;
(e) Coastal plains (lagoons) with slightly increased water salinity - Tupolang Fm.
Total Thickness 650-820m.
In 1971 (51), the authors distinguished the Kugitang Gr, including, in addition to the upper part of the Baysun-Jur Fm, four more suites with "bedded structure":
- organogenic-oolitic limestones and marls with interlayers of clays and siltstone (aleurolites). Thickness 20-120m (early Callovian);
- organogenic-oolitic, nodular, and pelitomorphic limestones. Thickness 80-205m (lower Oxfordian);
- oolitic and nodular-lumpy limestones. Thickness 70-160m (lower Oxfordian);
- pelitomorphic organogenic, nodular, and algal-coral limestones, gypsum-bearing. Thickness 60-130m (late Oxfordian).
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Having an age shift of the lower boundary within the Callovian, the series conformably overlies the Baysun-Jur Fm; and in the sections of the southern slope of Gissar and Mechetli, it transgressively overlies the Sandzhar Fm
Upper contact
Overlain by the Gaurdak Gr conformably in inter-reef zones, and with traces of erosion in reef complex zones. The upper boundary shifts from the lower part of the middle Oxfordian to the lower Kimmeridgian.
Regional extent
Mountainous and plain regions of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.
